The New York Choreographic Institute (NYCI) provides time, space, and resources for artists to advance both the process and practice of ballet today.

The work of the Institute takes place year-round, with a primary focus on two, two-week choreographic sessions — one in October and one in March. NYCI selects six emerging choreographers each year to be given uninterrupted time and studio space, access to dancers from New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet, collaboration with emerging artists from other disciplines, consultation with dramaturgs, and an immersive experience within New York City’s performing arts culture.

Leading the evolution of movement

We champion the choreographers who will influence the future of classical ballet for audiences everywhere.

NYCI expands the power of the choreographer and classical ballet to advance the artistic language and nurture new forms that provoke audience engagement in a rapidly changing culture. For 22 years, we have empowered emerging talent with access to New York’s best — top-tier dancers, interdisciplinary connections, and resources — to provide the space to push the boundaries of their vision.

Together We Move

“There is something deeper that we talk about when we talk about ballet: a belief that ballet, as a comprehensive and cohesive language system, has the capacity to reflect our rapidly changing culture. Institutionally, we are interested in engineering environments in which artists and audiences alike feel compelled to invest in ballet as a contemporary currency.”
