About Us

Mission

New York Choreographic Institute is a hub of creativity dedicated to cultivating the next generation of artists working to evolve and expand what ballet is, and who it is for. Through dynamic programs and partnerships, we support choreographic experimentation and risk-taking—prioritizing process over product. Propelled by the spirit of radical innovation that created New York City Ballet, we believe in the generative power of ballet to engage and inspire.

History

Founded in 2000 by Irene Diamond and Peter Martins, the New York Choreographic Institute was created to cultivate emerging choreographers who would shape classical ballet for the 21st century. From its earliest years, NYCI has served as a space for inquiry, research, and experimentation—providing artists with the time, resources, and freedom to explore new choreographic ideas without the pressure of immediate production. In 2018, Adrian Danchig-Waring, Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet, was appointed Artistic Director, continuing the Institute’s commitment to artistic excellence, exploration and innovation.

As NYCI reflects on 25 years of supporting choreographic development, the Institute continues to examine both the history and future of the art form. Building on its legacy of experimentation, NYCI seeks to shift the paradigm once again by inviting new voices and practices into spaces they have not historically occupied—expanding perspectives, challenging conventions, and reimagining who is empowered to shape ballet’s future. Through this ongoing evolution, NYCI remains committed to providing artists with meaningful opportunities to push the boundaries of ballet and to contribute to its continued vitality.
